RICO Crimes

RICO stands for the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. The RICO laws were passed with the purpose of fighting organized crime. However, these laws are now used to prosecute a wider net of people, including those whose underlying crimes include embezzlement, obstruction of justice, murder, and arson. The purpose of the RICO statute is to punish an enterprise or criminal organization from engaging in a pattern of illegal or corrupt activity. Punishments for individuals convicted of RICO crimes are severe and often involve many years in prison and large fines. For this reason, RICO laws have many critics who believe this law is being used beyond its original purpose to prosecute members of the mob. As a result, non-violent, first-time offenders may face unduly harsh prison sentences.
